Mr birding in the opening of the play? Essay
Mr. Birling is presented as arrogant and a social climber through the stage directions at the start of the play. He is described at the start, in the stage directions, as a ââ¬Å"heavy-looking, rather portentous man in his middle fifties but rather provincial in his speeches.â⬠This implies that Birling is a man who was born in the countryside and that he is not from a very important background. This shows that because of Birlingââ¬â¢s history, heââ¬â¢s a pompous man and he tries to show everybody how important he actually is; this is because of how his status used to be when he was growing up as a child. Priestley also conveys Mr. Birling as a pitiful social climber through what he says and his mannerisms at the start of the play. Priestley shows that Birling is aware of the people who are his social superiors, which is why he shows off about the port to Gerald, ââ¬Å"it is exactly the same port your father gets.â⬠He is proud that he is likely to be knighted, as this would move him even higher in the social circles. He claims that the party ââ¬Å"is one of the happiest nights of my life.â⬠This is not only because Sheila will be happy, but also because a merger with Crofts Limited will be good for his business. Through this Priestley presents Mr. Birling as selfish and very self-centered, showing that he only cares about himself and his business. Priestley does this to show that all capitalists were similar to Birling as they too only cared about their social status at the time. The use of dramatic irony in Mr. Birlingââ¬â¢s speech presents him as foolish and Priestley is clearly mocking capitalist values. Priestley sets the play in 1912 because that year was before a lot of significant historical events took place. This makes it easy for Priestley to use dramatic irony to display Mr. Birlingââ¬â¢s arrogance and foolishness. He confidently states that ââ¬Å"nobody wants warâ⬠and that it will never happen, and he has great faith that the ââ¬Å"unsinkable, absolutely unsinkableâ⬠ship Titanic will never sink. Priestleyââ¬â¢s use of the repetition of the adjective ââ¬Å"unsinkableâ⬠further accentuates Mr. Birlingââ¬â¢s arrogance. Obviously all these things really didà occur much to the amusement of the 1945 audience, who now know not to take Mr. Birling as an intelligent, thoughtful person. Overall Priestley uses the character of Mr. Burling as a representative of capitalism, showing that capitalists were foolish and arrogant, just like Mr. Birling.

Harlem Renaissance Poem Analysis Paper
Lee-Michael Torcedo Prof. Quiroz English 1302 October 22, 2012 Dreams After the civil war, African Americans obtained their freedom. Still despised by many white Americans, African Americans continued to fight for justice. Around the early 1900ââ¬â¢s the Harlem Renaissance began across the nation they fought for their culture and expressed it through art, music, dance, and literature. One of the biggest names in the Harlem Renaissance is Langston Hughes (Harlem). The poems he wrote better expressed the feelings of the many African Americans during this era.Langston Hughes published his poem, ââ¬Å"As I Grew Older,â⬠which explains the difficulty many African Americans had with following their dreams during this time. On February 1, 1902, Carrie M. Langston and James N. Hughes gave birth to, arguably, the most famous Harlem Renaissance literary poet, Langston Hughes. He grew up attending school in Kansas and Illinois, and graduated from High School in Ohio where he began writ ing his poetry. Later, Hughes went on to college, but stopped shortly after. He took many jobs in New York and a job working on a freighter that took him across the Atlantic Ocean to African, Spain, and France. He returned to Washington D. C. to live with his mother with hopes of returning to college. He had trouble making enough money and didnââ¬â¢t go back to college until a year later where he graduated from Lincoln University in 1929. After college, he began publishing his works and started to become famous. On May 22, 1967, Langston Hughes died of cancer in New York (Langston). Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ legend still lives to this day, and his poems are often mentioned in literature. In his poem ââ¬Å"As I Grew Older,â⬠published in 1925, he begins by saying ââ¬Å"It was a long time ago/ I have almost forgotten my dream/ But it was there then/ In front of me/ Bright like a sunââ¬â/ My dreamâ⬠(1-4). Whether or not Langston Hughes wrote this about himself or not, i t can go either way on who could be mentioning this and who is reflecting on the past that was a ââ¬Å"long time agoâ⬠. Hughes gave the perspective that the main persona is talking about his past and about how even though his dream was right in front of him, he could not grasp it.In the early ages of Langston Hughes life, many obstacles barricaded him from reaching his dreams and goals, losing sights of what he really wanted. He talks about a wall in the poem that rises slowly between him and this dream. It ââ¬Å"rose until it touched the skyâ⬠(11). The wall symbolizes his obstacles or what blocked him from his dreams. The wall rising until it touched the sky showed the degree and emphasis of the difficulty for Hughes to see his dreams. On line thirteen he mentions the shadow that the wall covered him in. There was no more light to be seen. All hope seemed to be lost until he ââ¬Å"breaksâ⬠down the wall, ââ¬Å"shattersâ⬠the darkness, and ââ¬Å"smashesâ⬠the night. At the other side of this wall, is light, the sun, and his dream. Langston Hughes must have at one point in following his dream felt so overwhelmed with everything in his way and just ââ¬Å"lie down in the shadowâ⬠(15). Just like in his poem, he takes down that wall and does not let it get in his way. He is successful in reaching his dream of becoming a well-known poet even through the worst of times. His poem reflects the situation many African Americans faced during this time.Freedom is still new to most and following dreams is difficult because of prejudism. Many African Americans ran into this ââ¬Å"wallâ⬠and many did not break through as Langston Hughes did. Although some did, they went through the same difficulties as Hughes poetically explained in his poem. The beauty of this poem is the universality of it. It may have been written to explain the difficulties African Americans had, but it reflects the difficulty for anyone following their dreams sh ould not be forgotten. They are not always easy to achieve, but that does not mean one should give up.The poem is powerful in meaning and motivational as it speaks to anyone and illustrates that you should never surrender. Langston Hughesââ¬â¢ dream as a young boy was to be known as a poet. Much like the wall, he had to overcome many obstacles to achieve his dreams. He would vision his dream so clearly in front of him like the sun but as he got older and taller, so did this wall that blocked his way. Even though, Hughes smashed down that wall and become one of the most well-known founders of the Harlem Renaissance. How Women Directors Influence Corporate Governance and Firm Dissertation
How Women Directors Influence Corporate Governance and Firm Performance - Dissertation Example Women have been shown to have a positive influence on a board, from aspects of participation such as attendance and dutiful diligence, to higher rates of pay for directors because of observable increases in performance which denote higher rates of return. The female presence on a corporate board provides a variety of advantages to the overall performance of a firm. Male Domination in the Board Room According to Gomez and Moore the statistics of female representation on corporate boards ââ¬Å"show a disproportionate representation of women on boards in relation to their roles in society as consumers and employeesâ⬠. According to Sparrow, only 15% of the board members in the United States are women, with only 1% being CEOs. In comparison, Sweden has 23%, Norway has 29%, Finland 20%, and Denmark 18%, because of Scandinavian policies that are encouraging the expansion of roles for women at the corporate level. However, in other European companies there is a lesser representation than in the United States. However, the problem with the statistics is that it does not reflect the number of female board members who are no more than a ââ¬Ëtrophyââ¬â¢ member, who holds several positions on the boards of multiple companies, decreasing the actual percentage of women who hold these positions. According to Reeves ââ¬Å"Womenââ¬â¢s lack of representation on boards is signific ant because boards make high level policy decisions that affect large numbers of people, including shareholders, employees, and ultimately consumersâ⬠(19). When women are represented on boards, there seems to be a ripple effect as more higher level management positions are then held by women within an organization. According to Reeves, the increases in CEOââ¬â¢s that are women have gone from nine in 2006, ten in 2007, twelve in 2008, and 13 in 2009, so the power balance is shifting, but by 2009, that number of 13 still only represented 2.6% of all corporate CEOââ¬â¢s. Reeves reports that while the average corporation has 21.8 corporate officers, only 3.6 of these positions are held by women. In 2006, 75% of the companies on the Fortune 500 had no women in top-earning positions within the corporate structure. An example to the social deficit that this creates can be seen where ââ¬Å"women are more involved than men in the healthcare decisions for themselves and for their familiesâ⬠¦(however) more than one third of the worldââ¬â¢s top 500 healthcare and pharmaceutical companies have no women on their corporate boardsâ⬠(20). According to Peterson and Philpot, the professional backgrounds of board members on corporate boards shows that women are just as qualified in experience and background as are the men, but that they serve less frequently on executive committees than do men. Peterson and Philpot also find that gender is related to the way in which members are assigned to boards, and that the resource dependent theory provides for the phenomenon of women serving on more human and socially oriented boards, with men providing more representation on financial and budgetary committees. They suggest that there is ââ¬Å"some relationship between committee assignment, gender, and the resource dependence role of directorsâ⬠(193). Using the theory put forth by Nussbaum, the capabilities based approach, the nature of female representation should not be considered by the nature of gender but

Impact of death and dying on the personal lives and practices Research Paper
Impact of death and dying on the personal lives and practices - Research Paper Example The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate my scholarly skills in critically analysing an article that has attempted to bridge the identified gap in knowledge. This article, by Sinclair, seeks to provide a deeper insight into the impact that death and experiences with the dying have on the personal and professional lives of those working in the palliative and hospice care environments. My critical analysis will focus on the purpose of the article, the methodology and research design used as well as the study population. The article is focused on bridging the identified gap in research and hence contributing to the body of knowledge in the profession. The purpose of this article is to sensitise the nursing professionals and scholars on the psychological needs of the practitioners working in an environment where the thoughts of death, dying and grieving are normal experiences. The topic is very significant at a time when palliative and hospice care are gaining increased attention in the healthcare field (Sinclair, 2011). This means that the psychological health of the practitioners becomes a burning issue that require equal attention. I strongly believe that this purpose is not just worthwhile as a contributor to the body of knowledge, but it has also come out clearly in the article. The researcher, in this article, has made use of a rather rare method in research. First, Sinclair has made use of ethnographic enquiry in which the participants are selected and observed in their normal working environment. It is from these observations that the researcher obtains the results to make a conclusion of the study. The ethnographic enquiry method has been enriched by the use of conveniently selected participants for the study (Sinclair, 2011). To study the participants effectively, the researcher conducted observations on a variety of healthcare professionals in different fields within the palliative and hospice departments. The collected information was analysed through

Week 4 Forum - Assignment Example They lived in poor neighborhoods famously known as ghettos, suffered indignities of racism, for example, whites segregated them in the industrial workplaces, and were mainly deployed in dangerous and labor intensive tasks. They were united and created communities within the big northern cities, and it was common to find several families from a southern state living in one northern state, for example in Chicago today. Economic effects included; Factory wage in the north was generally three times that of the south. Even as housing was a bit expensive in the north, they still had better living standards. On the other hand, dwindling workforce led to economic struggle in the south (Gunnar, 2009). 5. African American activist used religious language to encounter injustices and racism, they came up with movements that drew its members from different backgrounds and classes and were also keen on political organization such as voter registration. There was the Congress of Industrial Organization (CIO) which planned many number of black workers into labor unions for the first time ever. Job discrimination against blacks compelled A. Philip Randolph, leader of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, to give threats of mass action on Washington. This caused Roosevelt to issue an Executive Order 8802 banning discrimination in the employment of black workers. To investigate any violations, a Fair Employment Practices Committee (FEPC) was

Relationship between Communication and Maslow's Hierarchy of Research Paper
Relationship between Communication and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - Research Paper Example It is logical that some needs are impossible to be satisfied without communication, for example, social needs (friendship, love) are impossible without a partner which implies his or her search by means of communication, and this paper will investigate into the role of the interpersonal communication in the human needs satisfaction. Every individual has his or her needs which are the things that are necessary for living and survival, depending on the level of the needs. The needs are the things that make an individual act in a proper way to satisfy them and to stay alive, which means that the needs cannot be left unsatisfied. Many of the needs of a human being imply interpersonal communication: for example, such need as love or any other form of relationship demands a partner finding which is possible only by means of communication with the potential partner. This paper will consider to which extent the communication between the individuals is important in terms of human needs satisfaction. The hypothesis of the present research is that the interpersonal communication is important for satisfaction of human needs at all their levels and significantly affects this process and may be an unalienable component of the successful result. An Outline of Human Needs. Abraham Maslowââ¬â¢s theoretical works on the phenomenon of the human needs is the material which is most often referred to in this regard. He described all the needs of a human being by means of their hierarchic organization, graphically also known as the Maslow pyramid, into five levels: physiological needs, safety needs, love or belonging needs, esteem needs, and self-actualization. (Maslow, 1943, 370-396). The first level, physiological needs, obviously, is the primary level which includes the basic human needs necessary for survival, such as eating and sleeping. (Maslow, 1943, 373). The second level, safety needs, is the level implying securing the life safety and the things which are also necessary for
